why should we backup our sites if hostmonster does it daily and weekly? or they doesn't???

Because you should not rely on that backup alone to get your site back in case of an emergency. You should always have a backup of your site in your possession for redundency and protection.

I've got my entire website (databases included) with me and just move on to this hosting. So, my ask it's: how can I just upload my existing files? Is there any tool to take my backup and put my site online again? Any steps?
I'm gonna be reading this forum for answers and I'm gonna ask tons of things... I just hope not to bother, and I'll try to help with the issues I can solve or fix.:D

You should be able to upload the pages you use for your website into your new hosting account, via FTP.
You will need to create a database, and import your database information, through PHP-Admin. You will also have to check to make sure that your old and new database names match or else they won't connect properly.
I had to do this for my websites, but others may have done it a different way.

On the advice of backing things up, my main computer with all my site files crashed recently. I have tried copying files from hostmonster.com back to my computer so that I could continue working with them but hostmonster will not let me.
How can I do this?

You should be able to use any ftp program to download from HM to your pc. There are 2 ftp programs available via your cpanel. You could also (if you haven't already) down load FileZilla for free and use it. I have up / downloaded files to / from HM's server numerous times with no problem.
Hope this helps!

Have you SSH (shell) access on both servers? If so you could do a site to site transfer.

theoretically flashFXP can transfer directly between two hosts with ftp without the need for a ssh acount or comandline clients etc. most comandline ftp clients aren't made to copy multiple folders so that'd be my choice if it's possible.
hostmonster uses pure-ftpd
"The FXP (server-to-server) protocol is implemented. It can be available for everyone, or only for authenticated users."
- pure-ftpd website
i have tried but it didn't work (not all other ft servers suport FXP)
other fxp capable clients:
total commander (shareware)
SwiftFXP(open source, Linux)
if you must use commandline, use wget, it has ftp and mirroring capability so that'd work easy. (you could make a cron job of it :D )

I have got through the basic parts of website backup, I have made some backups to home directory using the CP Panel controls. But I get the idea I ought to have a backup on another server, in case the server the site is on gets corrupted. Most of the backup links I see, here and by using Google, are for backups of a PC, or backup from a server onto a PC, CD and so on, and I suspect that might be cumbersome given the size of my site.
The bulk of my site is essentially a forum, using Discus. I can easily keep copies of the posts in a free email, though that would be cumbersome to restore. But what I am really concerned about is the settings selected when we configured the software, the announcement messages and graphics for each thread. I also have a front page, but since I built that using the WYSIWYG editor on hostmonster, I usually have a copy of that on my laptop.
So, how do I go about backing up a website on hostmonster to another server, so that I could restore it if the server my website is on becomes corrupted?

You're website will still be up and running. The backup makes a copy of the files and puts them into a single package that you can download.

What is the difference between a "Full" backup, a "Daily" backup and a "Weekly" backup?
I've downloaded a full occasionally, and a daily as well. They are approximately the same size file for my site(s). But I don't know what the difference is.
Also, off the thread subject, but brought up here and other places, how do you contact web chat to tech support. I've seen RDM mention it here and other places, but I've never been able to find it. I'd like to be able to accelerate my tech support at times, without having to actually hog a techie with a phone call.
Thanks, Mike

Here is a conversation I had with the tech support folks:
Shaun [09:47]: Hi! Thank you for visiting our Real-Time Chat services. My name is Shaun.
Shadmego [09:47]: I was wondering what the difference is between a full site backup, a weekly backup and a daily backup. Thanks!
Shaun [09:48]: Full site is just one you create right there from the current files
[09:48]: Daily backup is the same thing, but the system does it once a day
[09:48]: and a weekly backup is also the same, but done once a week
[09:48]: each daily backup overwrites the last daily backup
[09:48]: while the weekly overwrites the weekly
Shadmego [09:48]: aahhh
[09:49]: And these aren't automatically downloaded?
[09:49]: they are stored on the site itself?
Shaun [09:49]: the daily and weekly are stored on the server
[09:50]: the full backup is just generated by yourself, and uploaded into your hosting account
Shadmego [09:51]: I see. So you cannot use the full backup to restore your site, unless you uncompress the files and upload them via FTP. But the daily and weekly backups can be used to restore your site from the compressed files?
Shaun [09:51]: yes
[09:51]: we can restore the daily and weekly for you
Shadmego [09:51]: ... it all starts to make sense .... thanks!
As for the live chat support question, if you go to www.hostmonster.com (http://www.hostmonster.com) and check out the lower left corner of the page, you will see the Live Chat button link there. Unless you are changing the files and folders themselves, then you should be ok with just backing up the database regularly.
A WORD OF CAUTION!!!
If you installed a forum and allowed users to upload avatars, then those images will most likely be uploaded to a folder somewhere. You should also make sure nothing in your CMS and forum is writing anything to any file.
If you are fairly confident your entire sites content is stored only in the database, then you should be fine if you only backup the directory structure on program updates/upgrades.

Hi To All,
Had WP 2.3.3 and finally got into the swing of it. Have eight blogs in one data base that needed to be changed from Blogger reference to WordPress. With all the good comments made about ver 2.5, felt it was OK to switch over. Long story short, “wrong move” on my part. The “manage posts and pages”, is for me a nightmare Much easier to remove a speck from ones eye with boxing gloves on. Not to say ver 2.5 isn't headed for stardom, just that the most useful function to me, is no longer there, to cope with my needs. If the ver 2.3.3 style of managing posts and pages returns to ver 2.5, will stay with it. For now am needing to find out how to return to ver 2.3.3, as I’m way behind on doing my blog maintenance updating. Is there a simple way to revert back to ver 2.3.3 ?
In response to the many complaints some 2.3.3 feature were reinstituted in the form of plugins.
So now as to HostMonster, Overall have no difficulty. It's mostly a learning steep curve. Did ask for clarification regards backup. Received an answer. But as with so many situations, way to generic. If any here have used "Backup and Restore", would appreciate some feedback, on just what is the Icon while IN Restore mode supposed to be showing! Are the little "green" lights supposed to be "flashing"! Mine shows the green lights as "on", but nothing else. How about the little tab that I believe indicates the"progress" as the upload proceeds, mine stayed the same for many hours, and no change on my site? Would half way appreciate if there was a "here is what to expect/ see, explanation. So will see where this leads.

For any that have used the HostMonster Backup / Restore program in the CPanel, would you explain these questions.
"Have had restore on/running for hours, and seems nothing is actually
happening. Also the icon shows a set of dim green points, should these be
flashing if backup is taking place! How long would a restore upload actually
take! Also the little tab ON the icon shows a orange color segment, but
never changes or moves."
My thoughts are that the database would be restored with no further action on my part, or am I missing something that requires another step?

There is a backup done for you everyday. IF you can access this daily via ftp then you can automate the download with a cron job on you local machine that would just download the daily backup from the server to your local machine everyday.
I would guess using the wget command (see man wget) to download your daily backup. Once you have worked out the command you could just enter it into a file and save it under /etc/cron.daily/
The only thing I am not sure of is when the daily's are done and if you can download the daily compressed backup directly without using CPanel. Perhaps someone else can help here.
If it is not accessible through ftp then may using ssh to copy the file down.

how might i either synchronize a file between my computer and my hm server or update a database with information on my computer.
if there was a command line i could use in putty that would synchronize or maybe i could just use the copy unconditionally command and overwrite the hm file, that would be ok. then a cron could be running on that file to update the database
then if that works like im thinking... does putty have command line options that i could use to sign in and run the command or something i can use with scheduled tasks on this end to make it completely automatic.
its kind of the opposite of what normally gets backed up. more like a restore
and... lets say the files are c:\backup\restore.php and /home/username/public_html/backup/restore.php for your cli examples

I am not sure if my issue is relate to this topic.
There are a lot of files on my site, most of which are small static html and png generated by a document tool.I use them as part of a technical reference library and which never change.
The abuse guy tell me these files break the backup system of the server by exceeding the 50,000 file count limit.I can not image how this could happen for I do the backup myself by tar and gzip.It just took hours and only several minutes for other files excluding the static library.
Is is possible keep these full static files while not break anything.
pghcollectibles
05-18-2009, 01:32 PM
if you exceed the limit, you exceed the limit. all i could think would be to generate the files when requested, then destroy them after sending to the browser or after a timeout or something
you could even have a script count the number of files in a directory and delete older ones first to keep "most viewed" from getting deleted

To pghcollectibles,
Thanks for your kind advice. It is very helpful when a CMS generates a lot files.
I have already packed these files into a single tar ball. Let me explain how they are created. The files are generated on my laptop and tared, uploaded to hostmonster, then untared. They are not cache and are treated as pure static content by the CMS. I knew this file count issue by asking an online chat guy after I got a "your account has been suspended" on my site, nearly 5 months away from I did the upload. I think I must had scrolled up my email too fast, neglected the warning letter.
where can I find some guidelines to learn how to prevent this kind of problem. It is not good to step into an unkown forbidden zone.
I post the message here due to I had received an answer, which is not very clear, that my files hurt the backup system.

We have different sites in different countries.
By HOSTMONSTER i can make my full Backup and must download it. Why ?
If not, it can be, all my data is destroyed. Other providers make backup by themself, i can choose 7 days ago backup, click restore, and all is done.
Why i must download my backup and too, upload the backup if i wanted to restore ??? (Gigabytes, one day ?) The backup is stored by you (HOSTMONSTERS). Why i can not choose to restore this backup. Ok, can be, i'am too stupid, but i found no restore option somewhere.
Please (HOSTMONSTER) make it so, that you store every site by yourself (for 7 days), and better to take 1 Dollar more per month for this very attractive service !!!

the reason you should download your own backup, is because if anything happens to your server, your backup that HM has, could get damaged as well. it is just so you have a copy for yourself. hostmonster is not responsible for your data. it says so in their TOS which you can go to from my sig if you are not familiar with it.

Because you should not rely on that backup alone to get your site back in case of an emergency. You should always have a backup of your site in your possession for redundency and protection.
~regards,

Also Hostmonster does backups but they don't guarantee that the backup will be done daily or weekly. Also if your account exceeds 4GB the backup service will not backup your account. You can backup your account a few ways. One would be through SSH Access by typing tar cfvz FileNameofTar.tar.gz FolderToBackup
The command line way guarantees that the tar will be created and won't be missing files because of a timeout or other issue.
You can also download all of your databases by going to your cPanel and clicking on Backups under the Files section. You will then see a list of your databases. Click on the link for the database name and you can download a gz file of your database.
You should definitely upload these to an offsite location such as mozy (http://www.mozy.com/?ref=3f9a896b&kbid=43410&m=5) or other offsite backup location.

Hostmonster does not backup. They say they do, but don't trust it.
Today I found that all my sites (13 add-on domains) and all their emails and configuration were wiped clean. My entire hosting account was as blank as the day I set it up.
I notified hostmoster via a support ticket and they said that their backup didn't work as my account was too large. Perhaps I could have known this before, but I didn't and now I have many days of reconstruction to do. Not happy.
Hostmonster could notify their customers better if their backups are not working.

It works fine for me, but then again I don't depend on HM's automated backups.
If your websites are that important you should have been performing your own backups all along. Even if a scheduled backup fails, it doesn't mean that you have to start all over from scratch.

Hostmonster does not backup. They say they do, but don't trust it.
Well my site was 4 gigs last month and i compressed it down to 1.5 gigs so it's not always the host to blame, and only when this new law came in with limits on files i noticed i had 120.000 files and i managed to get that down to 19.000 so like i said it's not always the host to blame. If i had bad performance last month it would have been me to blame not them.

Everyone should backup their sites regularly! It's quick and easy and will give you peace of mind. Login into cPanel (www.yourdomain.com/securecontrolpanel) and follow this instructional video.
http://hostmonster.com/tutorials/index?vid=how_to_use_backup_utility&menu=sub3
Wow. How easy could this be? I watched the video. Piece 'o cake.
However, when I went to do this for real, I had problems. I created a folder on my PC for my back-up, opened it in the left window, then went to the root directory on the host. After a bunch of stuff scrolling down in the window in the middle of the FTP screen, files started copying. I've tried this 4 times now with the same unsuccessful result, so somehow there's a problem.
1) Almost immediately, I get an Overwrite? Dialog Box. I've tried clicking yes to a single file, and clicking no. I still get an error, and anyway, the folder was empty when I started, so how can the file already exist?
2) The transfer ends with an Error Dialog Box, "One or more files could not be transferred."
Obviously then, I don't have my website backed up and I don't have a clue as to what else I should do differently. Please help! Thanks.

It looks like they revamped the tutorial site and things got moved around.

Actually, if you really ask them, their 'official stance' as i understand it is that they have Courtesy backups, that are NOT guaranteed.. and it is HIGHLY recommended that you do your own backups.

Thanks. By the time I saw your re-direct, I'd already called HostMonster Tech Support and they took me through it on the phone.
Thanks for responding though. Slowly, but slowly, I'll get the hang of this.

I agree. Occasionally, especially after making many changes on my site, I will zip my public_html folder and download it. It's only 25MB, mind you. Also, I backup my databases often. Peace of mind. :)

Back-up your HOME directory and the SQL separately AND download them to YOUR computer for archiving, then you will be safe (as can be) in any case,Do not depend on anyone but yourself for back-ups,HM is doing you a favor but its your responsibility.

I'm using Joomla to create my site locally. I plan to move it to Hostmonster in the next day or two and was wondering what a good way to do this was? I also plan to continue development locally and up date the site when needed. What is the best way to update the site once its is deployed while keeping content in tact? Joomla.org suggests using JoomlaPack but is this supported by Hostmonster?
Thanks
don´t u have a copy of each page you upload? don´t u keep a copy on your hard drive or something of each page you modify on the server? Don´t you have a local site (folder where u keep all your html files?)

hai...
First, you will need to download all of your site files and save them to your computer. The most convenient way in doing this is with the use of an FTP client.
*You will use an FTP client to access your Joomla account. Once accessed, you will navigate to your Joomla application folder and start downloading it.
*With this folder downloaded, you will have successfully backed up your Joomla website.
*You can now restore it by uploading it onto your domain at our convenience.

The time it takes to backup your system is well worth the energy. The energy used now is nothing compared to the time and energy it will take to restore what was lost.

And for the Macintosh CyberDuck is a great free ftp client.
I made a back up of my website yesterday, but unfortunately I exceeded my disk space by doing so. I tried deleting it, but I no longer have permission. Is there anyway I can fix this problem?

If FTP does not work for this, try the cPanel File Manager.
Should either fail, contact HostMonster Support directly via LiveChat (http://www.hostmonster.com) and ask them to delete the file for you.

I created a back up the other day. But I can still delete some files in there if I exceed my disk space right? What if I have large files. How long does it take for large files to be uploaded? I am just wondering if I will lose the files I have if the site back-up is down. I'm afraid that my files might get corrupted or something. Thank you for this input and video tutorials, it is indeed helpful!

If you cannot delete the file(s) through the cPanel File Manager, you should be able to do so within FTP or vice versa. Otherwise, contact HostMonster Support directly making a request and they will be more than happy to help you.
