SpamAssassin blocking Gmail - Whitelist fails

Over the past couple of weeks I noticed what I thought to be missing emails. I confirmed this and can confirm with a repeated test that GMail email is being deleted by SpamAssassin. I changed my scoring from 5 to 8 to 10 and yet an email with nothing in it but "test" was never rec'd by my email client thus must have been deleted. I then added "*@gmail.com" in whitelist and still nothing. I disabled SpamAssassin and email from GMail passes just fine.

So what is up with SpamAssassin in deleting gmail emails and why don't whitelist work?

Re-enable Spam Assassin, configure it to deliver any email that hits the spam threshold, then send an email from gmail. Once you have that email, check the headers as Spam Assassin will add in its own and show exactly what rules it hit and the score given for each rule. This should give you an indication of why it's being flagged.
