View Full Version : Backup to my hostmonster server?

I was thinking of backing up my home computer to my Hostmonster space via FTP. I'd call it a typical home computer setup with about 230 GB of stuff. I was going to use Acronis Home Image to manage and automate a disk imaging routine.

Is this kind of thing frowned upon?

My hope is that the Acronis backups will show as big, individual files on the server (one per backup), rather than as thousands of files, and therefore not be so much of a resource hog for the servers (though I'm not clear on this yet).

I see that the Hostmonster terms of service indicate that HM does not provide "unlimited space for... backups", but this would be limited to well under 300 GB. Thus my inquiry.

Thanks,

Dave

Unfortunately, using HostMonster for this purpose is prohibited as per the TOS (http://www.hostmonster.com/cgi/info/terms.html) section 9.15:

Backup Storage
Hostmonster.com offers its Services to host web sites, not to store data. Using an account as an online storage space for archiving electronic files is prohibited and will result in termination of hosting services without prior notice.

I don't think any shared hosting provider would allow you to store backups on their servers even if they offered "unlimited everything". Your best bet is to use a service intended for off-site backup of your important data or set up your own backup system on a remote server that you own.
