Redirect help for novice?

I’m very new at this so for my very basic questions…

I have purchased several similar domain names and want them all to be directed to one shorter one that will be the official and only website.

Can I direct the domain names without having web pages actually active?

It this what is called URL redirect through and “.htaccess file”…something I’ve read about but don’t understand?
